Zhangjiajie offers natural beauties as well as locally-flavored enjoyment for your palate. It is recommended to walk a few steps to try the nearby famous chain restaurant Suoxi Mountain Village · Xiangxi Folk Local Cuisine and immerse in its traditional cultural vibes. Must-orders include San Xia Guo, a local specialty that traces back to four centuries ago. It is cooked with cured meat, tofu, carrot, white radish and other stuff, which are all put into a pot to stew. The soul lies in its spiciness, achieved by using locally produced dried red chili, hot but not pungent as most other species do. Average cost per person: CNY 80 / USD 11. To let more people learn about the folk customs, the owner also organized a Culinary Culture Museum right in the restaurant. Day 2 Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

★ Ride the World’s Tallest and Fastest Outdoor Elevator
In the morning, we will explore the most famous Yuanjiajie Scenic Area. To save you time and effort, we have generously offered you the chance to ride the Bailong Elevator, the world’s highest outdoor sightseeing lift built on a cliff, with a vertical height difference of 335 meters (1,100 feet), cutting what used to be a 4 or 5 hours’ drive to the mountaintop to only 88 seconds.

Follow the guide to walk around the sightseeing plank road, you’ll find that the shapes of the mountains in Zhangjiajie are quite different from what you’ve ever seen before – they are not rolling hills, but individual columnar peaks, each with its separate root rising straightly from the ground to the sky. Prepare to be amazed by the incredible shape of the Hallelujah Mountain, which is so rare that it was chosen as the model for Floating Mountains of Pandora in the US sci-fi film Avatar screened in 2009. In late 2008, the Hollywood photographer Hansen spent four days capturing the marvelous beauties in Zhangjiajie and it’s these photographs that later inspired director James Cameron to create the elements of his Pandora world. With a vertical drop of about 150 meters (492 feet), it is an epitome of some three thousands of its likes that spread across Zhangjiajie, all carved by nature over a span of some three million years. In addition, admire the naturally-formed No.1 Bridge under Heaven which stretches across two peaks, get enchanted by the scenery at the Enchanting Platform, and enjoy being surrounded by verdant greenery in the Back Garden.

After lunch, take the sightseeing shuttle bus to Yangjiajie Scenic Area, composed of gurgling Xiangzhi Stream, Longquan Gorge with rolling peaks, and creatures-frolicked Hundred Monkey Valley, each of which emits a unique charm. With our guide, you will get a glimpse of the imposing peak wall landscape, the Natural Great Wall, which took about 380 million years to form. Amazingly, these rock formations are shaped like walls from one angle and peaks from another. Then make our way to Tianzi Mountain, where the terrain is high, with long and wide vision and rich perspectives. You’ll wonder whether this is really formed by nature when overlooking hundreds of grotesque peaks and rocks, especially the representative Imperial Brush Peaks and Flower Fairy Peaks, just named for their looks. If the peak forest is the skeleton of Tianzi Mountain, then the sea of clouds is its soul. Those karst mountains are hidden in the churning clouds and mist, like an island in a fairyland, making you yearn for it. At last, take the cable car down the mountain and get back to the hotel to recover your whole body from the day’s tiredness.

Day 3 Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Golden Whip Stream

Today, our guide and private driver will pick you up from your hotel and escort you to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Get ready to let the green fill your vision, the waterfall spray wet your shoulders, and the fresh air fill your lungs.

★ Test Your Mettle on Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
A thrilling experience of strolling on the world’s highest Yuntiandu Glass Bridge, suspended between two mountains and famous for setting several world records, is beckoning you. Walking slowly on it and looking down through the transparent glass floor, the 300-meter-deep valley will make your legs tremble, and you’ll understand why CNN has listed it as one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.

In the afternoon, our guide will lead you to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park again, where you will go on a hike through the pristine beauty of the Golden Whip Stream, listening to the brook gurgling through the valley and birds chirping in the forest. This stretch of flat road along the stream is 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) long, part of which is one of the filming locations of a Chinese classic, Journey to the West. Follow our guide to enjoy the oxygen and relaxation, as well as appreciate China’s first-class protected plants in its best section covering almost all quintessential sights. Then you will be escorted to another hotel in the downtown Zhangjiajie, which is convenient for our itinerary tomorrow.

Day 4 Tianmen Mountain; See off

After breakfast, start our remarkable day to the Tianmen Mountain, a legendary mountain in Zhangjiajie, famous for its longest alpine cableway in the world and the naturally formed hollow Tianmen Cave on the hillside.

Arrive at the cableway station in our private car, and then our guide will accompany you on the Tianmen Mountain Cableway, which starts from the downtown, goes beyond the rural scenery outside the city, and rises further above the lush virgin forest. You may catch your breath when you see the staggering 99 bends of the mountain road below. In half an hour, we’ll reach the Air Garden at the mountaintop. Follow the guide to explore those scenic spots one by one: try the cliffside Glass Skywalk, and visit the Yuhu Peak, Wood & Stone Romance, and Tianmen Temple… Later, take the 7-level escalator down to enjoy the landmark Tianmen Cave. As a rare high-altitude natural cave in the world and being fogged all year round, it is like a mirror inset in the canopy of heaven. Also, it is a mecca for countless extreme challenger enthusiasts all over the world. Afterwards, continue to ride the 5-level downhill escalator to Tianmen Square. If you’re feeling up to it, you may also choose to hike down the 999-step Heavenly Stairway. After posing for pictures for a while, take the express cable car down to the exit.
